"An enormously smart, clear-eyed, brave-hearted, and quite personal look at the benefits of meditation."

—Elizabeth Gilbert

Nightline anchor Dan Harrisembarks on an unexpected, hilarious, and deeply skeptical odyssey through the strange worlds of spirituality and self-help, and discovers a way to get happier that is truly achievable.

After having a nationally televised panic attack, Dan Harris knew he had to make some changes. A lifelong nonbeliever, he found himself on a bizarre adventure involving a disgraced pastor, a mysterious self-help guru, and a gaggle of brain scientists. Eventually, Harris realized that the source of his problems was the very thing he always thought was his greatest asset: the incessant, insatiable voice in his head, which had propelled him through the ranks of a hypercompetitive business, but had also led him to make the profoundly stupid decisions that provoked his on-air freak-out.

Finally, Harris stumbled upon an effective way to rein in that voice, something he always assumed to be either impossible or useless: meditation, a tool that research suggests can do everything from lower your blood pressure to essentially rewire your brain. 10% Happier takes readers on a ride from the outer reaches of neuroscience to the inner sanctum of network news to the bizarre fringes of America’s spiritual scene, and leaves them with a takeaway that could actually change their lives.

  • Once you get past his ego...

    By Miz.Best
You’ll actually take away life lessons that will change who you are at the core. From someone who suffers from the ‘inner voice’ deeply - i am empowered at the day to day changes this has made for me in as little as a week.
  • 10%Happier Meditation Serie

    By jbadonsky
It's so refreshing and infinitely more effective to have these mellow guys like Matthew doing the meditation and treating you like an equal versus some perky woman's voice talking down to you. I use the sleep meditation every night. And the interviews are top notch in terms of intelligence, enjoyment and learning. Thanks Dan. You're kinda a down-to-earth genius.
  • Loved It

I felt 10% Happier after just reading the book. I found Dan's down-to-earth approach refreshing and interesting, and loved the bits of humor sprinkled throughout. This book gave me new insights on meditation and made me more compelled to make it a priority in my life.
  • It's like being given the answer sheet to a test!

    By HautieAudie
I have recommended this book to everyone close to me. Before the book I would have never recommended it. And quite frankly I'm not recommending meditating to them.. I'm recommending this well written, highly entertaining and engaging book. The readers will on their own want to meditate because of it. Thank you Dan Harris for making my life better by improving my thoughts and reactions/responses. I'm happier and more confident and calmer and understanding of the world spinning around me :)
  • Love this book!

    By SnizhanaH
I started practicing meditation after reading Dan's book. I love meditation because it “wakes me up” and allows me to experience life for real. Thank you for this book!

I've never been a fan of nonfiction. I want to read a story, not information. However, I have been getting more and more curious about meditation, and I like Dan Harris. So I downloaded his book to my iBooks app (or was it my Kindle app.?). I. Couldn't. Put. It. Down. Thank you, Mr. Harris. I am ready to begin my meditation practice.
  • Better than any Dr. you can find

    By MGromov
I bought this book as a last ditch effort, after being convinced that I had some illness, going to countless doctors, and having an ungodly amount of lab work done, I discovered that I am a perfectly healthy human being. Why then was I plagued with depression, exhaustion, bowel irregularity, irritability, and drastic mood swings? I am doing everything right, or so I thought. I eat clean food, I exercise often, I have a stable job, and a fulfilling marriage. It finally hit me while running sprints outside, when I received the call from the doctor that my recent lab results were great. (I’ve been to 4 specialists at this point). So there it was, I realize what if this is all in my head? What if I am causing my own suffering? This was, of course, not what I wanted to hear. I WANTED there to be something physically wrong with me. My options were to go on drugs, which I abhor, or to seek counseling. Both of which I have experienced previously and eventually found my myself back at square one. I decided to do some internet research, because, how can that ever go wrong (insert sarcasm)? I happened upon this book. I just finished it tonight and it has been one intense week. I felt as if he (Dan Harris) was reading my mind, which was funny, since he felt the same way towards his mentors, as you’ll read in the book. All of my symptoms; depression, anxiety, mood swings, and yes, even the bowel irregularity, are being caused by my mind. I started meditating the first day and I am sold. It is very difficult at times, as I constantly need to pull myself back to the moment, but it is so worth it! I have also downloaded, and am almost through, The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. Meditation is such a straight forward thing, in my opinion, but yet has such power to change our lives. I am amazed how much of life I have gone through thinking about the past and the future and worrying about everything. Please buy this book. It changed my life. You will not regret it. A huge thank you to the author for the life changing awakening.
  • The best instruction manual ever.

    By Caribbean Jim
Separates meditation from religion and converts it to an exercise program, similar to, a guide for learning to play championship level tennis. The memoir portion, which may seem overly long and introspective as you read it, is actually indispensable for getting you to realize that with the incredible resources at his disposal he has really investigated the subject in depth, such that by the time you get to the Epilogue and the Appendix you are at a fever pitch of desire to get started training your mind, as Dan did to obtain the mental muscle he needed to be an anchor on a major TV network, and you want to acquire this mental "superpower" to become great at whatever it is that you do or want to do with your life.
  • Half-Way through so far so good

Very good read at least for the first half
  • Rings as true as a mindfulness bell

    By JamieR61q
As a longtime meditator who had learned from the same teachers as Harris, the story was warmly familiar and often hilarious. Although the book is expertly written from beginning to end, my favorite section describes his experiences on his first retreat. All the judgments and misconceptions he describes are so common to he first retreat experience - as are the revelations that expose those first impressions as illusion. Many people on my holiday gift list are getting this potentially transformative book.
