Revenge at best
What an amazing beginning of a series. Loved Marlon and Ray characters. From their sizzling hot chemistry to their perfect banter this story has it all. I didn’t realize this series was an iBook exclusive or I would have read it earlier. The story ends with a cliffhanger but I was totally okay with it as by the time I discovered this series all three books were published. An entertaining read .
Another brilliant love story by RVD!!!
Marlo!!!!! Wow!!!! Can’t say enough how this nerd turned hottie is amazing!!!Ray is a different character!!! Such sadness and loneliness to the girl who has “everything”!!!!Their Story sounds typical but it isn’t. I am so ready for the next one!!!
Just finished up this first book and I can’t wait to read the next two parts! Marlo and Ray have a volatile history, going back 4 years prior to the start of the story. We get to feel the anger and animosity Marlo has towards Ray, especially given how he was treated when they were in high school. There’s always 3 sides to every story, and we get little tidbits of life for Ray, growing up the child in a gilded cage, but there’s so much more to her story that we haven’t yet learned. Just when I thought things might be heading in the direction I wanted the story to go, that cliffhanger happened and there’s a good chance I depleted some of the oxygen in my office at work. Ready to dive into the next book right now!
Loved the turnabout in this book...although Marlo is in the dark about a lot of stuff....which was think would change his mind drastically if he knew the truth about. Can’t wait to read more!
Need all 3!!
**** I have to preface this review by saying that these stats may change as I read the rest of the series. I feel like I’m just getting to know the characters and story which is why the marks are a little low.
Book Boyfriend: 💋💋💋.5
Marlon or Marlo was abandoned by his parents when he was 3 and taken in by Nya, an older lady that worked for a very wealthy family when he was 6. After the first summer spent playing with the little girl living in the giant house, things changed. He recognized his place in the world which was not in her world. Marlo grew up working for everything he had and was bullied for his lanky frame and geeky personality. He did not fit in and nobody from his high school let him think any different. The chip on his shoulder grew heavier and heavier. He loathed the princess living in her perfect castle but craved her at the same time. After four years of college, Marlo has filled out and is the perfect leading man - handsome, built and driven to succeed.
Strong Female Lead: 💋💋💋
Ray is a contradiction of sorts. She grows up in a 22 bedroom house and wants for nothing. Well, nothing material anyway. Ray is popular, beautiful and rich. What more could a girl want, right? Yet, she is unhappy because her parents aren’t really parents and the huge, empty house just emphasizes how empty on the inside she really is. Even though Ray is surrounded by people and “friends”, she is alone. Ray works hard and is driven to succeed even when her parents don’t support her. She has a fire sparking inside. She needs to learn to let go, trust- stoke the fire because she has the potential to burn bright and hot.
The plot is off to a good start. The book is set at a summer drama camp for the stars. The counselors are college students pursuing acting and the campers are high schoolers. This camp is supposed to jump start your career and acclaimed for its previous stars. Ray is a last minute addition to the staff and she hopes this experience and exposure will get her an agent. Even though she comes from money, her parents do not support her pursuit of acting. They will not help her so she has to do it on her own. Marlo has worked at the camp, what seems like a few summers, and has reached the pinnacle of director. He too wants to make it in Hollywood and plans to move to LA after camp. Her nanny started fostering him when he was 6 and Ray and Marlo could not have grown up more different. He was her lawn boy… he cut the grass and was a nerd in school. She was a princess and was one of the most popular girls in school. He hated her for the perfect life she had and was bullied throughout school. Little did they both know that they had more in common than they thought. Lonely. Desperate. Hard working. Driven.
Steamy Factor: 💋💋
You can cut the sexual tension with a knife or at least that’s the hope. There isn’t any steam until the end of the book because the characters have a love/hate relationship, heavy on the hate. That scene isn’t overdone and gives just enough details.
I feel like this is hard given it is a trilogy. I am enjoying the story so far and plan to read the second book because the first left me wanting more. I’m getting to know the characters but maybe not as much as I would like. There are hints of depth there so I’m hoping as the next two books come out, I will learn more about the them and connect. It isn’t the best RVD book I’ve read but I’m hoping as the story progresses through the series, it will get better. I love RVD books so I’m not giving up on the series and have high hopes for the next two.
Kiss and Tell Book Blog
Full of Angsty Goodness
Ray and Marlon will pull you in all directions. I feel this is RVD's best work to date.
So what happens when the one person from your past, you really wanted to forget about - all of a sudden shows up at the Summer camp you are the director at? Well for Marlon - it brings up a lot of anger and maybe some revenge.
Ray and Marlon had been friends since they were little kids. With his foster mom working for Ray's family, she was always a part of his life. Until High School things changed. Ray was the popular girl. Dating the captain of the football team. The IT girl. While Marlon was the skinny nerdy kid who had a major crush on Ray. One night. He thought everything changed, until the next day... it seemed everything was back the way it was before.
So when Ray shows up as a camp counselor at the theater camp he's the director of years later. All he sees is red. And maybe making her life miserable.
I can't give too much away but know that this book is full of sexual tension and all kinds of yummy angst. Seriously I could not put the book down! It does end on a cliffhanger, so be aware. But luckily for us, we will get the next book fairly quick! Pick up this series! Its a MUST.
A Fun Read
By Bella is freaking out
This was such a fun and sexy read. Marlo and Ray’s chemistry is off the charts. A great enemies to lovers story. The author left us with a cliffhanger that has me dying for more. I can’t wait for the next book!!
4 Summer Heat Stars!
Summer Heat by Rachel Van Dyken is your quintessential must read this summer! It’s one of those light easy reads that hooks you right from the start. RVD introduces readers to Marlon and Ray. Ray is your rich privileged girl and Marlon is the skinny foster kid, who mows her lawn. Ray and Marlon shared a moment but the next day, she ignores him. Fast forward four years later, Ray and Marlon meet again but this time around, Marlon isn’t the same skinny boy as she remembered. So what happens when these two are in the same room? Will these two find themselves as enemies or lovers?
As I was saying earlier, this is definitely your sweet, fun, playful and yet riveting summer read. It is one of those stories that grabs your attention as you eagerly await what will become of Marlon and Ray. As always, RVD has written characters that are relatable so readers like myself are invested to these charismatic characters.
Flirty, hot, summer fun!
A great quick beachy read to start off a new trilogy.
Tension, revenge and tons of lusty fun in summer fun. I can’t wait to see where the drama goes or how these two will work through thier animosity and come out as more than hate sex.
Sometime what you see on the outside or perceive is never the truth!
