Tormented by the loss of his men, Marine Corps Captain Sawyer Mathis returns home to attend a retreat for children who had lost a parent in war. He’s forced to spend time with Katya Khavalov, the sister of one of the Marines killed during a firefight under his command. Unafraid of war or death, Sawyer is determined not to let a beautiful woman with a quick temper and broken heart deter him from trying to help her family heal.

Fiery yet sweet Katya resents the cool, unflappable commander. He brought one brother back in a box and the other dismembered. She blames him for destroying her family and believes him to be incapable of feeling anything – until she witnesses firsthand the toll the war and deaths are taking on Sawyer. He’s suffering, too, and too stubborn to admit it.

The longer the two spend together, the more they begin to understand each other. What neither is counting on: the feelings they ignite within each other.

This is the first book in the Sons of War Series by Lizzy Ford.

Great book of life, struggles, grief and best of all Love. It was a beautiful story that made me laugh, cry, reflect on the important things in life and most of all appreciate that honesty, truth and love is what matters in the end. Great book!

I never cry when I read books or watch movies but this book made me cry. It was heartfelt and amazing. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series.
  • Engaging

I’m not really a fan of switching between characters from chapter to chapter, but my son is a Marine so the title got my attention. I still don’t care for the style, but the flow kept me engaged in the story enough to finish the book in one sitting.

I actually loved the story of this book. The characters were well thought out and so was the story line. Complicated characters created in a way that you didn’t get lost in the story. A great read!

Loved this story! Touching love story with wonderful characters, and a story that developed out of a tragedy, with tears, anger, frustrations and love. Enjoy this book! Doesn’t seem like it but it has a start and ending....enjoy!!
  • Could’t put this book down!

As this story developed, I got pulled further and further into it. I couldn’t put it down, read late into the night which I don’t do too often. I needed to continue Katya and Sawyer’s story and find out what was going on with Harris. It’s a story of soldier brotherhood and the difficult decisions made by them and what their families go through. Can wait to read more about this group!

This story is very romantic. I was sad that Katz twin brothers didn’t make it back from overseas, one is dead and the other lost his leg. When there commanding officer is at the funeral sparks fly. Once this happens, you can’t put this book down. The author was great at keeping you hooked.
