NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY: LibraryReads BookBrowse Goodreads

“You’ll love this engrossing novel.” —People

The bestselling author of A Man Called Ove returns with a dazzling, profound novel about a small town with a big dream—and the price required to make it come true.

People say Beartown is finished. A tiny community nestled deep in the forest, it is slowly losing ground to the ever-encroaching trees. But down by the lake stands an old ice rink, built generations ago by the working men who founded this town. And in that ice rink is the reason people in Beartown believe tomorrow will be better than today. Their junior ice hockey team is about to compete in the national semi-finals, and they actually have a shot at winning. All the hopes and dreams of this place now rest on the shoulders of a handful of teenage boys.

Being responsible for the hopes of an entire town is a heavy burden, and the semi-final match is the catalyst for a violent act that will leave a young girl traumatized and a town in turmoil. Accusations are made and, like ripples on a pond, they travel through all of Beartown, leaving no resident unaffected.

Beartown explores the hopes that bring a small community together, the secrets that tear it apart, and the courage it takes for an individual to go against the grain. In this story of a small forest town, Fredrik Backman has found the entire world.

  • About Life and Choices- Very Worthwhile

My book club selected this. I never would have read it otherwise. The initial hockey theme would have put me off. I’m glad I read it, though, because it provides numerous insights to groups of people who I rarely meet, and helps explain their interests and behaviors. It also provides important insights about life and choices for all groups of people.

As a hockey mom and a former minor league hockey wife, I can’t tell you how accurate this book is. I try to tell people it can be any sport, but it obviously hits close to home for hockey. It’s a very different world - bonds you can’t break due to the time these boys spend together which is more than most sports. And the moms who engage - so very accurate. You pick your seats in the stands based on where other parents are sitting so as to avoid the one who will stir up the drama. Regardless, it’s a mom who loves her child and just acts it out a little differently. What an amazing book. Bravo! Can’t wait for Us Against You to come out.

To start with the book is much, much too long. There are too many characters with small side stories and so much repetition of the hockey theme. I loved A Man Called Ove and was sure this was going to be another good one, but I really did not enjoy this book and flipped through many pages to get to the end. Very disappointing.
